What Is GERD?


GERD stands for Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease, and GERD is also known as acid reflux. Gerd is a condition in which  liquid contents, bile, acid, and partially digested food in the stomach regurgitate into the esophagus. The regurgitated liquid usually contains acid and pepsin that are produced by the stomach. (Pepsin is an enzyme that begins the digestion of proteins in the stomach.) The refluxed liquid also may contain bile that has backed-up into the stomach from the duodenum(the first part of the small intestine that's attached to the stomach). GERD is a chronic condition, and once diagnosed, it usually lasts for the person's lifetime. Heartburn is a common symptom of GERD, along with dyspepsia, chronic sore throat, and chest pains. Most individuals with GERD also have hiatal hernias, which make it easier for stomach contents to reflux into the esophagus. A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach bulges into the chest cavity through an opening in the diaphragm(a muscle that separates the stomach cavity from the chest cavity).
